Calling In

For today's #365ofgoodWR post I want to share an article that I found informative and helpful. It explores the idea of calling in rather than calling out. There are several takeaways for me from this article including:
  • Calling in may not always be appropriate as we can't insist that "people hurt by cruel or careless language or actions be responsible for the personal growth of those who have injured them"
  • Although the motivations behind calling others out may be good, doing so can "contribute to increasingly toxic and polarized conversations. And we make learning less inviting."
  • Calling in doesn't guarantee a positive and peaceful solution to all situations but it is an "extension of grace, the opportunity to grow and to share learning and responsibility for each other."

Here are a few examples of statements that may work to call others in:
  • “I need to stop you there because something you just said is not accurate.”
  • “Do you think you would say that if someone from that group was with us in the room?”
  • “There’s some history behind that expression you just used that you might not know about.”

If you'd like to find out more about calling in, found at Teaching Tolerance, check out the full article here.
